Traveling to the Iguazú Falls - Flying, Bus, or Private Transport

There are various ways to travel to the Iguazú Falls. Whether you choose to fly, take the bus, or go on a road trip with private transport, the experience is unique and well worth it.

By plane: From Buenos Aires, there are daily flights to Cataratas del Iguazu International Airport, located near the Iguazú Falls. Flights from Jorge Newbery (Aeroparque) or Ezeiza (Ministro Pistarini) airports provide a quick and convenient way to cover the distance. For current flight times, visit skyscanner.com.

By bus: Long-distance buses offer an affordable option from Buenos Aires to the Iguazú Falls. Via 'Plataforma 10', you can search and book tickets with different bus companies. Although the journey can take 18 to 20 hours, it offers the chance to enjoy the Argentine landscape.

By private transport: Driving from Buenos Aires to Iguazú offers the opportunity to discover unique cities and towns, as well as the Iberá National Park, one of the largest protected natural areas in South America. During our ride, unfortunately, there was a great drought in the park, and the rivers were dry. Sadly, we had to pass by this park. The drive takes about 3 days.

A beautiful advantage of private transport is that you can drive to the park at your own convenience. All roads are paved, and good infrastructure is present.

Discover the Cataratas de Iguazú and the Güira Oga Animal Refuge

On the Argentine side of the Iguazú Falls, you'll discover breathtaking hiking trails and viewpoints, including the majestic "Garganta del Diablo," or Devil's Throat. A free train within the park offers a convenient way to reach the starting points of the hiking trails. Additionally, you can take a boat ride on the river to witness the falls from an even closer perspective, though this comes at an extra cost. In the park, the coatis are also present in large numbers. Be careful when you take out your food, as they are very hungry and curious. The walk along the river and past all the viewpoints on the waterfalls is very impressive. The sight of a large river falling into the abyss is an experience that will stay with you forever. It is hard to express in words.

Since Argentina is suffering from severe price inflation at the time of writing, I am not providing current prices. For the latest ticket prices, visit the Iguazú Falls website via this link.

As part of your adventure in Puerto Iguazú, don't miss the Güira Oga animal rescue center. Established in 1997, this center plays a crucial role in the protection of injured, sick, or endangered animals and in educating visitors about wildlife conservation.

TIP: In Puerto de Iguazú, you can also visit the tri-border area. Here you have a view over both Brazil and Paraguay. You'll also find some local shops here for souvenirs.

Foz de Iguazú

If you're staying longer in Puerto Iguazú, consider a day trip to the Brazilian side of the falls. This is highly recommended; while the Argentine side offers a top-down view of the waterfalls, the Brazilian side provides a frontal view. Moreover, a walkway brings you close to the "Garganta del Diablo" - be sure to bring a raincoat if you don't want to get wet! Buses to the Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls (Foz de Iguazú) depart from the bus terminal in Puerto Iguazú.

Accommodations in Puerto Iguazú

Puerto Iguazú offers a wide range of accommodations. Whether you're looking for a quaint hostel, a lodge, or something more luxurious like a bed & breakfast, there are plenty of excellent options. For those traveling by van, various campgrounds are also available. Below, you'll find three accommodation options catering to different tastes and standards.

  • Tucan Hostel: This hostel receives top ratings on Hostelworld and has excellent reviews. However, keep in mind that it can get fully booked quickly, so early reservation is recommended. The hostel offers various room types and features a small swimming pool, which is particularly welcome in Puerto Iguazú's humid, warm climate. Another plus is its central location.

  • Secret Garden Iguazú: This bed & breakfast is a more luxurious option than a hostel, and this is reflected in the price. If you are looking for something more upscale, this is a good choice. The reviews are also very positive, and with a 9.1 rating on Booking, it has an excellent evaluation. Although there's no swimming pool, the rooms are equipped with air conditioning, and the staff and breakfast are highly appreciated. The location, 1.5 km from the center, receives somewhat lower ratings.

  • Our Stay at El Coati Camping: This rough, tropical site gives you the feeling of sleeping in the middle of the jungle. The area could use some maintenance, but the price is low in contrast. A better option might be Camping Tierra Roja, although it's located a bit further from the center.

Restaurants in Puerto Iguazú

Although Puerto Iguazú may not be renowned for an abundance of top-tier restaurants, we have uncovered a few recommendations that are worth trying:

  1. Patagonia Brewery: One of Argentina's finest breweries, and Puerto Iguazú is home to one of its locations. Space is limited, and it tends to fill up quickly, but you can delight in delicious Patagonia chopp beers on tap here. The menu also features food, leaning more towards pub fare like hamburgers, pizza, and empanadas.

  2. La Mama Pastas and Salsas: This cozy pasta eatery offers a few dining tables, and the homemade pasta is simply delectable. Even though it may feel like you're dining in a store – as they also have a retail and take-out service – this place is definitely a must-try!

  3. La Rueda: If you prefer to indulge in a fine cut of meat or fish, this might be an excellent option for you. This classic Argentine restaurant, with its elegantly laid linen tables, is well-regarded in Puerto Iguazú. Risottos and classic desserts are also available. Bear in mind that this restaurant is somewhat pricier compared to other dining venues in Puerto Iguazú.

Whether you are looking for a casual beer with friends or an elegant dining experience, these restaurants in Puerto Iguazú have something to offer for every taste and occasion.
